fractional CO2 laser resurfacingWhat is fractional CO2 Laser resurfacing? Fractional CO2 resurfacing is a treatment that uses a fractionated carbon dioxide laser beam to produce small pixels (holes) in the skin. This stimulates collagen regeneration in the deeper layers of the skin. Since the outside skin is not removed, it can heal faster with minimal discomfort. What is the treatment for? This treatment is used to treat fine lines, wrinkles, sun damage, poor skin texture, scars and skin laxity. It is usually thought of as two treatments in one. The first part is the semi-ablative treatment which yields smoother skin with less lines, wrinkles and texture problems. The second part of the treatment is the creation of collagen in the deeper skin layers. This is equally important but it takes about 4–6 months to see the tightening affects of the increased collagen. The most common treatment areas are the face, neck, chest and hands. Is it painful? It is considered a treatment that produces heat and moderate pain much like a sun burn. We use an anesthetist to make you comfortable during the treatment. Because of the medications you will receive, you will need to have someone drop you off and take you home afterwards. When the treatment is over it feels like a sun burn that gradually calms down over a few hours. How long does the treatment take? You will stay with us for about 1.5–2 hours. What kind of results can I expect? The results of all treatments vary from patient to patient. Most patients experience smoother, tighter and more evenly colored skin. Deeper wrinkles will be shallower but still visible. Dynamic wrinkles (those caused my muscle action on the skin) may disappear initially but will recur within the first 6–8 weeks afterwards. If you want, a second treatment can be done 4–6 months after the first. How long do the results last? Depending on your age and lifestyle, the results can last 3–5 years. It is important to remember that you are still aging. The aging process, genetics and sun exposure all play a part in the longevity of the treatment. With a healthy lifestyle and a minimum amount of direct sun exposure the results will probably last longer. We have several skin care programs which we recommend you use afterwards to help prolong the results and keep your skin in better condition. As with anything, the more you do for your skin the less your skin seems to age. |
